The cost, said County Manager William Wilson Jr., includes all the paving necessary for DOT specifications for the new intersection there. It includes everything except the traffic signal, which hasn’t been approved by the DOT.
The low bid from Quality Construction by McLeroy includes asphalt paving, curb and gutter, storm drain, acceleration/deceleration lane and striping for the parking lot and entrance.
Brian Upson, the county’s engineering consultant, said work should start in 45 days and be completed, according to the contract, in three to four months. Wilson said the project “is moving right along,” with work continuing on the building as well.
Wilson said the project remains on schedule for a planned opening in December.
The Spalding County Board of Commissioners also approved a contract with the Georgia Department of Human Services to receive a Community Services Block Grant worth $119,190. The funds will be utilized for the Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program and The Salvation Army’s After and Summer School program as well as grant administration by the Three Rivers Regional Commission.
The contract is effective Oct. 1, 2012, through Sept. 30, 2013, which coincides with the program year. Meals on Wheels serves one meal a day to 27 homebound seniors for 250 days, while the After and Summer School program provides homework assistance, basic skills training and assistance with standardized testing for 35 school-age children.
