Maddie Jordan, a fifth-grader at Crescent Elementary School, had a special idea for her recent birthday party. Instead of her friends from school and the U-11 Academy soccer team giving her presents, she asked them to bring donations for the local Backpack Food for Kids program.

That program was announced in early April by the Spalding Collaborative and UGA-Griffin in an effort to address hunger and security issues in local school children.

Spalding Collaborative Executive Director Joseph Walker said at the time that it is not unusual for some school children to not eat at all between Friday afternoon, when the school week ends, and Monday morning, when the school week starts again.
