The Spalding County Board of Commissioners agreed to cover the full cost of a school resource officer the school board had considered cutting.

At Monday’s meeting, the second budget review hearing so far for the county, Commissioner Raymond Ray presented a request to cover some of the Griffin-Spalding County School Board’s cost for school resource officers, as that board had proposed cutting two of the positions to reduce its expenses. Ray, a former school board member, said the school system “is under a much heavier burden that the county or city as its only source of revenue is property taxes.”

He said the school board had asked the county to cover the entire cost of two of of the five school resource officers the county provides.

“I told them no, but offered to pay for one for only one year,” Ray said.
