The summer of basketball continues for the Griffin High Lady Bears basketball team as it will compete in the second day of the Griffin High Girls Summer League Camp today at The House. Camp action begins around 2 p.m. with the Lady Bears set to hit the court at 3 p.m.

It’s the second tournament the Lady Bears have hosted this month — Griffin hosted the GHS Summer Jump Off Camp on June 1-2.

There are currently four high school teams in the camp, which is scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays for most of this month: Griffin, Spalding, Lamar County and Morrow. Lady Bears head coach Veronica Lee said she is waiting to get confirmation from two other teams to officially round out the camp.

The four current teams played Tuesday and Griffin High came out victorious against Lamar County. Lee said she didn’t keep individual scores from that game, but said she was happy with how her girls played for the most part.

“I had mixed feelings about our game against Lamar. I was glad we showed signs of putting game-plans together,” Lee said. “We converted on a couple of offensive set plays, but we still have to do better on defense. Our defense wasn’t as strong as I’d like it to be, but we can work on that.”

Lee said the rising seniors and the rising sophomores stepped up on Tuesday and she was proud of that, but she said the team needed to be more aggressive in its play. Lee said she’s looking forward to seeing how her team will play against the Lady Mustangs of Morrow at 3 p.m. today. Griffin split two games with Morrow at the Griffin Jump Off tournament on June 1-2.

“It will be interesting to see how we play Morrow in the rubber match,” Lee said.

Lee, coming off her first year as head coach of the Lady Bears, said she has no problems hosting several camps during the summer.

“I love hosting summer camps. It gets the girls out there in game action and they get to play with each other on a regular basis,” said Lee. “It keeps the girls in shape and keeps them close by and out of trouble. We don’t want them to go astray during the summer.”

Griffin will host crosstown rival Spalding in Summer League camp action next Tuesday at 3 p.m. at The House.

Later in the month, the Lady Bears will have an individual basketball camp from June 18-20 at The House and the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream will head to The House on its summer tour on June 21.
