Griffin Fire-Rescue Capt. Brian Brock was named the city’s Strongest Link for May for designing a safety device.

Fire Chief Tommy Jones nominated Brock for the monthly city award for inventing a device to safely allow fire crews to handle large diameter hose. Jones said Brock came up with the design when touring AmSafe as part of the Griffin-Spalding County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class.

“Our department is very headstrong in leadership development, and this is an example of why we send them,” Jones said.

Brock said he came up with a design that secures tools to the large diameter hose and also safely secures the hose to the fire hydrant. He explained firefighters have had tools fall off the truck when trying to get the hose off the truck, and when touring the safety harness facility, he came up with the design.

Jones said the device has now been placed on the Griffin Fire-Rescue Units.

The AmSafe facility in Griffin closed June 1, as part of a consolidation after the company was acquired by by TransDigm Group, with the work moved to corporate headquarters in Phoenix, Ariz.
