The Griffin High Bears football team gave a good accounting of itself, putting both of its squads in the final four of the team's 7-on-7 passing camp Thursday morning and afternoon at the GHS practice field.

Teams in the GHS 7-on-7 camp were Griffin A & B, Spalding, Lovejoy, Harris County, Ola, Union Grove, Warren County, Jefferson County and Macon County. Griffin A went 7-1 overall, Griffin B went 4-3 and Spalding went 3-4.

The final four consisted of Lovejoy, Griffin A, Griffin B and Jefferson County. In the camp semifinals, Griffin A defeated Griffin B 26-8 and Lovejoy beat Jefferson County 31-14. Lovejoy defeated Griffin A by the score of 21-19 in the championship game, but Griffin head football coach Steve DeVoursney was pleased with his players.

“We did really well today. To finish second and fourth in this camp was a big deal and I’m proud of the guys. If you’re not ready to play in summer league ball, it can snowball on you,” DeVoursney said. “I think we focused better than we did at Whitewater and we came ready to play at our home camp.”

Lovejoy, which has several Division I prospects and is 3-0 in the passing camps it has attended, defeated Griffin A by two in a title game that came down to a missed 2-point conversion by Griffin A late.

“We had to turn it up a notch today; Griffin went toe-to-toe with us and made us work,” said Lovejoy assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Kevin Jones. “We just wanted to make sure we finished the game. That’s our motto this year — finish everything we do.”

Jones said the Wildcats, who have moved into new Class AAAAAA this upcoming season, are on a mission to get out the bad taste of losing the Class AAAA state title game to Tucker last season.

“We have to finish what we start — I don’t care if it’s eating our lunch as a team, it’s all about finishing our food. We’ve got to do what we can to finish on top at the end of the year,” he said.

Spalding head football coach Nick Davis said he was proud of his guys’ effort in their very first 7-on-7 series of games this summer.

“I’m really happy with my players; we went 3-4 in our first series of games this year,” Davis said. “We beat Warren County twice and beat Harris County. I’m glad we put in a great effort today.”
