Griffin went 1-2 on Saturday, losing 2-0 to Jackson High and losing 7-4 to Crawford County before prevailing in its last game of the day, a 10-1 romp over Newton County.
Griffin and Jackson were scoreless until Jackson plated its two runs in the sixth inning. Katie Rowell got the only hit for Griffin in the contest. In the loss to Crawford County, Griffin’s Amani Durant and Chelsea Calloway both went 2-for-3.
The bats for Griffin finally awoke against Newton County, as the Lady Bears had several hits and routed the Lady Rams. Rowell and Durant each had two hits and two runs scored and Durant had three RBIs in the game. Griffin (2-3 overall) is off until its home opener next Tuesday against Region 4-AAAA foe Riverdale at 5:30 p.m.
“We hit the ball hard against Newton; it was good to see our bats gets going,” said Griffin head coach Kevin Mobley. “Overall, I was pleased with our defense — we just have work to do on offense. But we’ll be alright; it’s a work in progress.”
Spalding went 1-1 on Saturday, defeating Eagle’s Landing High 12-4 but losing the final game of the day 11-4 to Luella. The Lady Jags (2-2 on the season) get back in action today at Fayette County at 5:45 p.m. before playing their home opener Thursday against Jackson at 5 p.m.
