The 2013 budget for the state of Georgia includes $3.5 million to build a facility where food scientists at the University of Georgia (UGA) Griffin Campus will help businesses launch new food products and processes.

According to information provided by UGA, the university’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) and the Griffin-Spalding County Development Authority have been seeking funds for the project since 2005. The university and the authority will each add $1 million to the total construction fund of $5.5 million.

The funds will be combined to build a dedicated Food Product Innovation and Commercialization (PIC) building on the UGA-Griffin Campus.

“I’m optimistic that we will have occupancy within two years,” said UGA-Griffin’s Assistant Dean Jerry Arkin.
