In June of 1963, U.S. Marine Cliff Judkins was flying an F-8 Crusader over the Pacific Ocean when his jet fighter caught fire during refueling. When his ejection seat failed, he stood up and was taken off the aircraft. On his way down, Judkins attempted to open his parachute — only to find out that it wasn’t working, either.

The Alabama native, born in 1937, hit the water from 15,000 feet in the air. And he survived.

“It was like waking up from a very vivid dream,” said Judkins, who shared his story with the Rotary Club of Griffin Thursday.

As he was free falling into the ocean, Judkins said he was mainly thinking about getting the parachute to open, though he gave up on that happening at about 5,000 feet away from the ground.
