LOCAL SPORTS BRIEFS: Bear Askew Golf Tournament upcoming

Deadline is 6 p.m., Oct. 29 or the first 96 golfers to register for the second annual Bear Askew Golf tournament to benefit Stepping Stones. The tournament will be held 9 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 4 at the Griffin City Golf Course.

Entry fee for the four-man Fort Lauderdale is $60 per person which includes social, green fee, cart and awards luncheon. Teams will be drawn by the golf committee.

The social for the event will be 6:30 p.m., Nov. 3 at VFW Post 5448. The awards luncheon will also be held at the post following the event. Golfers, spouses or dates are invited to both of these functions.

Stepping Stones will be selling hole sponsorships. Please support this organization.

The entry fee can be paid at the VFW Post of to any member of the Golf Committee. Members on the committee include: Chad Askew, Josh Askew, Carlton English, Rodney Harris, Roger Harris, Chuck Hammill, Steve Ballard, Randy Walker, Mike Crowder, Terry Green, Ricky Stephens and Wayne Hardin.

SPALDING HIGH TENNIS TOURNEY: The Spalding High boys and girls tennis teams are sponsoring a round-robin fund raiser where you can come and play alongside team members from 2-5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 21 at the Spalding High tennis courts.

Fee is $25 per player.

RIFLE MEET: The 2012 North Georgia College and State University Rifle Invitational is an exhibition match Oct. 12-13 at the Ole Mill Range Complex in Griffin.

Categories include junior individual in junior, intermediate junior or sub-junior collegiate divisions; open individual in civilian, service, or veteran divisions; or team in junior, intermediate junior, sub-junior, open, collegiate junior, intermediate junior or sub-junior collegiate divisions.

GSHF NOMINATIONS: Do you know of a stellar athlete, coach or contributor in any sports arena who deserves recognition? The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame (GSHF) is calling for nominations of individuals, who may be living or deceased, to be considered for induction into the Hall of Fame. Nomination categories are 1.) Athlete, 2.) Coach/Manager, 3.) Contributor, 4.) Senior, or 5.) Multi-Sport/Combination.

All nominees go through a three-tiered screening process by committees composed of GSHF Authority members and representatives from across the state in all areas of sports. Nominations must be submitted on nomination forms provided by GSHF and returned to: Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, P.O. Box 4644, Macon, GA 31208.
