SCFD being investigated

The Spalding County Board of Commissioners have requested “the sheriff investigate the misconduct of employees at the Spalding County Fire Department.”

Following a 45-minute closed session for personnel and potential litigation, the commissioners returned to open session and County Attorney Jim Fortune asked for the motion for a letter to the sheriff requesting the investigation. The board voted unanimously on that motion.

The board then voted 4-1 to hire attorney John Lowry and his firm to investigate the Fire Department for hostile workplace allegations by an employee, and for the investigation to be expedited and for an amount not to exceed $10,000. Commissioner Bob Gilreath was the lone dissenting vote for this motion.

I have gotten inside information from several firemen within that department. They said the last investigation, two years ago, was a "hoax". The investigating firm were "friends" with a political group that had alternative motives to bring bad light on the fire department itself according to a repeated conversation from one within that group. What I found was more disturbing than his findings is that most of the questions asked to the firemen during the investigation weren't even remotely related to the incident at all and some firemen were directed to answer. WoW!! What a mess!

Spalding County spent $10,000 investigating the fire department two years ago. The board was given a complete, comprehensive report by an outside investigator which contained facts, findings and recommendations. They were informed of problems within the department, which start at the very top and work their way down. The independent investigator recommended that Kenny West (Acting chief at the time) be fired. Not only was he not fired or even disciplined, he was named chief by William Wilson. Almost none of the investigator's other recommendations were followed either.

So will this board pay any attention to the findings of a different investigation, or will they just ignore them, too, throwing away thousands of dollars in the process?
