A Griffin man was hit by a pick-up Wednesday night while crossing Taylor Street.

A traffic crash involving a pedestrian was reported to Griffin Police last night at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of West Taylor and 12th streets. Officers arrived on scene and located 63-year-old Willie Smith, of 620 N. 9th St in the roadway.

Smith was treated by local EMS and transported by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center with visible trauma, police said. Griffin Police officers are awaiting an update from Atlanta Medical Center on Smith’s condition, said police spokesman Capt. Dwayne Jones.

The crash involved a Mazda pick-up operated by Chris Crumley of Jackson, police said. Crumley was driving east on Taylor and Smith was in the process of crossing from the north side of intersection when he was struck by the Mazda.

No charges are expected and Sgt. Daniel Jett reports that the incident was unavoidable as Smith was wearing dark clothing not using a crosswalk.

Police said West Taylor Street was closed for 30 minutes as medical personnel worked to stabilize Smith for air transport. According to call records, Griffin Fire Rescue was dispatched for this accident at 7:25 p.m., arrived on scene at 7:28 p.m., and returned to service at 8:04 p.m.

Almost every time that I drive down Taylor street, people are walking out in front of oncoming traffic. I'm surprised someone doesnt get hit every day. It seems people rarely use the crosswalks at traffic light intersections.
