Two Griffin Police officers were are Blaze Recycling speaking with some subjects when one officer observed a man in a pick-up truck reportedly hiding his face from view. The man was reportedly continuously bending over as if intentionally hiding his face, which brought the officer’s attention to him.
As the officer approached the truck, the man reportedly adjusted his hat so as to be less recognizable, As the officer got closer he recognized the man as someone he know to have an outstanding warrant.
The officer walked up to the truck and began speaking with the passenger closest to him, beginning “a police/citizen encounter and conversation about the scrap metal business.” During the conversation, the officer noticed the subject sitting in the middle seat, whom he believed to have an open warrant, reportedly kept reaching down onto the floorboard and messing with something to conceal his face.
Because this behavior seemed odd, the officer asked the man his name. The man reportedly replied, “I live out on Moon Road,” but never looked at the officer when he spoke.
He was then asked his birth date and asked if he was Sammy Davis. The man reportedly mumbled something and was then asked to get out of the truck, which he did.
When asked again for his name and birth date, he provided a name with a birthday of Nov. 4, 2012. While checking the name with dispatch, the officer saw the man reach into his pants pocket, and reportedly asked him not to do it again, to which the man reached his hand inside his denim jacket.
He was asked again not to do that. The second officer came over to assist and asked the subject if he had any weapons or illegal contraband that would cause him to reach in his pockets after being told not to.
The man reportedly said no, but as the second officer began a pat down, he again reached into his pocket. The first officer drew his Taser and advised the man if he did it again, the officer would consider it a threat and tase him.
The officer attempted to continue the pat down, but the man reportedly struck the officer’s arm to deflect him, then spun away from the officers and reached inside his jacket. Seeing the action as a threat to himself and the officers and out of concern the subject was reaching for a weapon, the first officer deployed the Taser. and the subject fell to the ground.
Officer attempted to handcuff the man, but he reportedly kicked at them, and the first officer used the Taser to drive stun the subject, who upon being stunned complied immediately and was secured in handcuffs. A search of subject incident to arrest reportedly turned up a pocket knife in his right front pocket and a quantity of suspected marijuana and suspected methamphetamine in a white plastic container in the inside of the jacket.
The subject was identified as Sammy Glenn Davis, 46, of 186 Vaughn Road, Griffin. He was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, obstruction/resisting arrest and the outstanding warrants.
He was transported to police headquarters, processed, checked for injuries and declined medical treatment, before being transported to the Lamar County Jail.
