While Griffin High quarterback Jaquez Parks (15-19-1 for 181 yards and a TD — he also added a pair of TD runs) didn’t come close to his career-high mark of 273 yards passing set the week before in a 29-14 win at archrival Upson-Lee, Parks and backup Bears quarterback Anforne’ Stroud (10-11-0 for 152 yards and 2 TDs) combined to pass for what is believed to be a modern-day school record of 333 yards in a single game.
ON RECORD PACE?:
Griffin High has been flirting with the school’s modern day record for average points per game in a season (37.5 ppg) set in 2009. The total, which does not include scores on special teams or defense, is 33.4 ppg heading into Griffin’s play-in game Friday at home against Eagle’s Landing (1-8).
Griffin (8-1) is likely to help its average going against the Golden Eagles which are allowing a region-worst 39 ppg. However, regardless of what Griffin does Friday it’s unlikely to get anywhere near the school’s all-time mark for points averaged per game (49) set in 1942. That total, however, has not been adjusted for scores on defense and special teams.
TOUGH SEASON:
Spalding’s woes continued on offense Friday. The Jags, which are averaging 4.5 ppg on offense, were shut out for the second week in a row, the third time in the last four games and the fourth time this season.
Spalding, which has not scored on offense since a 31-10 loss at Upson-Lee in the fifth game of the season, will try to reverse that trend when it takes on winless Forest Park (0-9) in a season-ending game 7 p.m., Thursday at Tara Stadium in Jonesboro.
GRIFFIN D:
The Griffin High defense pitched its first shutout of the season Friday.
It was Griffin’s second shutout in two seasons, the last one coming in the season opener last year also against Spalding.
THIS WEEK:
While Spalding looks to salvage its season with a game against Forest Parks, No. 8-state ranked Griffin looks to extend its school-record consecutive state playoff appearance mark to 12 years when in takes on Eagle’s Landing in a play-in game at Memorial Stadium for the right to advance to the Class AAAA state playoffs next week.
Kickoff between the Bears and Golden Eagles is set for 7:30 p.m., Friday.
