County officials may be raising the millage rate later this month.

County Manager William Wilson Jr., told the Spalding County Board of Commissioners Monday night that “right now it looks like there are decreases in the tax digest.”

Wilson said he along with City Manager Kenny Smith, Tax Commissioner Sylvia Hollums, Chief Appraiser Tim Whalen and school officials met to go over the tentative tax digest last week. The city, county and school board will each meet later this month to set their respective property tax rates,

Wilson said the county will like have to “use the roll back millage rate.” The roll back rate is the millage rate that is needed to bring in the same amount of revenue as the previous tax rate.

The current millage rates are 15.01 mills for the county, 19.06 mills for the school system and 8.636 mills for the city.

The new proposed rate for the county is 15.604 mills according to the ad to be published Friday in the legal organ, based on the adjusted tax digest of $1,384,337,506 for 2012, down from $1,437,979,168 in 2011.

Wilson said the school board is scheduled to meet at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 26, with the county commissioners agreeing to meet at noon the same day to set their respective millages. Wilson said the city commission has a workshop scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 277, at 9 a.m., and may be meeting to set the city’s millage rate at that meeting.

Once all three boards approve their millage rates, Wilson said, “Sylvia (Hollums) will got to Atlanta to get them approved to send tax bills out, which will be due in January.”

The tax bills have been delayed do to the reassessments and the still ongoing appeals process, with about 5,000 appeals pending at last report. The county is still looking for nominees to serve on the Board of Equalization, which reviews and decides on property revaluation appeals.

Wilson said the Clerk of Courts Marcia Norris has advertised twice for 12 nominations. “We need as many as we can get,” Wilson said.
