Pike traveled to face the Central Macon Chargers last Friday night, whipping them 35-6 in the regular-season finale. That win combined with Jackson’s loss to Carver-Columbus last Friday put the Pirates in state as the No. 3 seed while Jackson slid to the fourth seed from Region 2-AAA. It's the first state berth for the Pirates under second-year head coach Brad Webber.
Pike County (6-4 overall, 4-2 region) will make the journey to Sandersville, Ga. Friday to face the Washington County Golden Hawks (9-1) in Class AAA state playoff action at 7:30 p.m. Pike last made the state playoffs in 2008 under then-head coach Mac McMillan.
As for last Friday’s game, Pirates quarterback Tyler Gregory rushed for 3 touchdowns and threw a TD pass to wide receiver Darius Jordan and Artez Oglesby rushed for a TD to complete Pike’s scoring. The Pirates led 21-0 at the half and never looked back against Central Macon (2-8, 2-4).
Lamar County 54, Crawford County 0:
BARNESVILLE — The Region 4-AA champion Lamar County Trojans improved to 9-0-1 overall and 7-0 in region play as they thoroughly dominated the visiting Crawford County Eagles 54-0 last Friday night in the regular-season finale at Trojan Field. Lamar will face the No. 4 seed Cook Hornets (7-3) Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the Class AA state playoffs at Trojan Field.
Crawford County (0-10, 0-7) was overmatched for last Friday’s contest and had no chance against the No. 4 state-ranked Trojans, suffering its seventh shutout loss of the season. Lamar scored 42 points in the first quarter and never looked back, putting its subs in to start the second quarter.
Lawrence Austin had 3 touchdown runs, his twin brother Lance had a 61-yard TD run, Jamarcus Walker had a 17-yard interception return TD and Jeremy Fletcher had a 14-yard TD run all in the first quarter. Micah Banks had a fumble-reovery TD in the second quarter to make the score 48-0 Lamar and L.J. Smith’s 34-yard TD pass to Quentin Frazier completed the scoring for the Trojans.
Bo Dunn, Quay Searcy and Chris O’Neal all had fumble recoveries for the Trojans.
