There were 26 girls at the All-Star game, many of them from around the Southern Crescent, including Fayette, Clayton, Henry and even Cobb counties. Two girls were from the Augusta area. Local girls at the game were Alyssa Risper (Rehobeth Road Middle School), Whitney Combs (Spalding High), Destiny Holston (Griffin High), Zorria “Zulu” Mann (Spalding), Ramesha Risper (Griffin) and Katie Rowell (Griffin). The entire event was filmed by the Entress’ Ink Film Works Production Company.
“The showcase came about as a vehicle to assist in spotlighting these girls’ individual softball skills sets,” said USSSA Jr. Pride-Red Dawgs coach Rodney Risper. “All of the individual showcase results have been sent to more than 200 college softball programs.”
The girls showcased their skills and afterwards they were split into two All-Star teams. Both the games and the skills sessions were filmed and each girl had her choice of five schools to receive her film.
Combs tied for the best radar throw from right field to third base at 55 miles per hour. She also ran the 2nd fastest time in the 40-yard dash with a 5.44. Mann had the best radar throw from shortstop to first base at 57 mph and the best radar throw from first to third at 58 mph. Mann also placed 2nd in catcher’s time from home plate to 2nd base at 1.97.
On the throw from shortstop to first base, Combs placed 2nd with a radar throw of 55 and Rowell placed 3rd with a 54.
On the throw from right field to 3rd base, Rowell placed 2nd with a radar throw of 54 and also placed 4th in time from home plate to first with 3.13.
Risper said Milwaukee Brewers scout Larry Aaron, son of legendary Braves outfielder Henry Aaron, ran all the skill set activities for the girls at the All-Star game. Aaron was one of three scouts in attendance.
