BARNESVILLE — Junior kicker Tyler Scandrett booted a school-record 47-yard field goal as time expired to give the Lamar County Trojans football team a 24-21 win over the Benedictine Cadets last Friday in Class AA state second-round playoff action at Trojan Field.

Scandrett’s field goal propelled the No. 4 state-ranked Trojans (11-0-1) into the state quarterfinals while Benedictine’s season ends with an 8-4 record.

The Trojans had to rally from a 21-7 halftime deficit — their first halftime deficit this year — to get the victory. Benedictine’s Chance Jackson gave the Cadets the lead at 7-0 with an 11-yard touchdown run in the first quarter but Lamar’s Lawrence Austin answered with a 9-yard TD run to tie the game at 7-all. Jackson scored two more TD runs in the second to give the Cadets the 21-7 lead at the half.

The Trojans made key plays on defense in the second half, shutting the Cadets out the rest of the way. Lamar’s Jeremy Fletcher scored on a 1-yard TD run at 7:16 of the third quarter, but the point-after failed and Benedictine led 21-13. Lawrence Austin’s interception led to the touchdown.

After Lamar senior lineman Bo Dunn caused and recovered a Cadets fumble in the fourth, Fletcher scored another TD — this time from 10 yards out — to get the Trojans within two at 21-19. Trojans quarterback Lance Austin passed to Ray Lyons for the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 21, setting the stage for Scandrett’s heroics.

Lamar will now travel to Atlanta to face the Lovett Lions in the Class AA quarterfinals Friday at 7:30 p.m. Lamar and Lovett are both No. 1 seeds, but Lovett gets to host the game after winning the coin toss between the teams.
