Mrs. Doris M. Phillips

June 15, 1929—Nov. 23, 2012

Griffin resident



Mrs. Doris Mae Phillips was born June 15, 1929 in Birmingham, Ala. to Jessie Lee Price and Mary Lee Tucker. She passed at her residence to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Nov. 23, 2012.

Doris moved to Griffin in 1977 with her husband of 45 years, Leonard Phillips, of Akron, Ohio. They were married in St. Louis, Mo.

Survivors are her husband, Leonard; sons, Tyrrell Phillips, of Griffin, Donald Green and his wife Renee, of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Theresa Green, of Atlanta; brother Willie Orr and his wife Betty, of Lorain, Ohio; uncle, James Price and his wife Susie, of Birmingham, Ala.; brother-in-law Edward L. Phillips and his wife Mary, of Griffin; nieces, nephews and cousin Shirley Ann Wyatt, of Akron, Ohio; and friends Cynthia Blalock, Pearlie Mae Compton, Jewell McCray, and Dorothy Gilbert.

During her working career, she loved working in customer service. She was a people person and a friend to all who met her in life. Doris worked in retail sales at Morrow-Powell, Famous-Barr, Macy’s, Dress for Less in Griffin, and many post exchange positions during her husband’s military service. She was a cosmetologist and passed the state board in Missouri in 1970. She was a pioneer in the Section 8 housing program when it started in Griffin many years ago.

She loved traveling with her husand Leonard in the military and was stationed in Saudi Arabia, England, and Germany. Their stateside assignments were San Francisco, Calif.; Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind.; Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; and Fort Polk, La. She developed a love for fishing and you would find here sitting on the fish bank with many friends over the years. Doris was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Post 8480 Griffin for many years but remained active.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 at 3 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church, 8 Cheatham Road, Griffin with Pastor W.A. Hinton Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may visit the family on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 2-3 p.m. at the church.

Mrs. Sadie Murphy Murray

Aug. 24, 1929—Nov. 25, 2012



Mrs. Sadie Murphy Murray was born Aug.24, 1929 and passed away Nov. 25, 2012 at the age of 83.

Sadie was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth Malcolm Murphy Sr. and Erma Lee Murphy.

Survivors include her son, George Niles Murray, III and daughter in law, Dorothy Budd Murray of Griffin; daughter, Elizabeth Leigh Murray Miller and son in law, Mark Joseph Miller, Sr. of Savannah; grandchildren, George Niles Murray, IV, Olivia Ann Murray, and Mark Joseph Miller, Jr.; brother Kenneth Malcolm Murphy, Jr., and his wife, Cathy Murphy of Crystal River, Fla.; niece Kimberly Murphy Gundling and great niece, Dana Gundling.

Sadie was born and raised in Quitman, GA. She was educated at Wesleyan College in Macon and at the University of Georgia where she earned her Degree in Education. She taught for 22 years and retired from the Dougherty County school system in 1981. She was a 40 year resident of Albany, GA where she was a member of Porterfield United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Doug Walker at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 30 at First United Methodist Church of Quitman. Sadie was not only a beloved mother, but also a caring friend that will be greatly missed.

Tammy Sampler Horton

Tammy Sampler Horton, age 53 of Griffin, passed away on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at her residence.

Tammy was born in Griffin, Georgia, on September 16, 1959. She is preceded in death by her son, Billy Joe Smith and her daughter Misty Sampler. She was a member of the Pike Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include her children, Angel Miller and her husband Brian, Kellyn Stanfield and her husband Richard, Lindsey Smith; grandchildren, Gage, Noah, Kyleigh, and Ahliyah; mother, Angie Britt; father and step-mother, Joe and Mary Sampler; sisters, Julie Sampler, Wanda Allison; brother, Steven Sampler; step-sisters, Anita Pryor, Arlene Blasingame, Gina Chambers; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation for Tammy Joan Sampler Horton will be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home. Funeral Services will be conducted on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 1:00pm in the Chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Reverend Riley Fenley will officiate. Burial will follow in Griffin Memorial Gardens.

Rev. Raymon Howard Monkus

May 23, 1923—Nov. 24, 2012



Reverend Raymon Howard Monkus, 89, died on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, at Brightmoor Hospice in Griffin.

Raymon was born in Preston, Ga., on May 23, 1923. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, Zack Monkus and Eddie Johnson Monkus.

He is survived by his wife, Melba Roberts Monkus; one son, Clayton (Helen) Monkus of Mount Holly, N.C.; one grandson, Clay Monkus of Matthews, N.C.; and two granddaughters, Angie Monkus Day of Charlotte, N.C., and Pamela Monkus Rountree of Marietta, Ga.

Raymon had eight great-grandchildren.

During Raymon’s lifetime, he believed in living his life by serving his fellow man. He assisted people with farm financial opportunities, served as the Administrator of a nursing home facility and served his Lord as a Minister.

A visitation with family and friends was held Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at the First Assembly of God Church from 1-1:45 p.m. prior to the funeral service.

The church service was held on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012 at the First Assembly of God Church at 2 p.m. (North Stonewall St., Dawson, GA 39842-1168), with interment in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Centerpoint Community.

Pallbearers serving were nephews: William, Keith, Heath, Morris, Guy and Danny Monkus

Mr. Jimmie Slade Williams, age 47 of Griffin, passed away on Monday, November 26, 2012.

Mr. Williams was born in Griffin, Georgia on January 2, 1965. He is preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow Williams and Reba Virginia McMichael Williams.

Survivors include wife. Faye Williams; son, Timothy (Tim) Williams; stepchildren, Jennifer Hardin and husband Chuck, Kelley Clark and wife, Alecia; sister, Reba Landers and husband Tim; brothers, Jeff Williams and wife Donna, Steve Williams, Tim Williams and wife Wendy; several step grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
