Cameron Johnson scored 13 points to lead Spalding High past winless Woodland-Stockbridge 57-51 home Friday night at home as the Jags broke a two-game losing streak.

The Jaguars (3-2 overall, 2-1 Region 4-AAAA Div. B) started off the game with effective play on both sides of the court. They displayed excellent shot selection and let the Wolfpack (0-7 overall, 0-3 4-AAAA div. A) know early that they weren't kidding around defensively by forcing an 8-second violation just over a minute into the game.

Going into the second quarter ahead 16-10, Spalding struggled to open up the lead to a persistent Woodland team, letting the score get as close as 20-17 with just under four minutes to play. Still, they were able to keep a 7-point advantage going into halftime thanks to a ferocious slam by 6-foot-4 forward Omari O'neal with 2:54 to go, and an open-court steal and fast-break layup by junior Alex Bonner with 1:54 left on the clock.

Spalding spent much of the third quarter building up the score with forced turnovers from their full-court press, achieving their game-high lead of 13 points on a back court steal from Phillip Goodrum and an easy finish at the rim from Stephen Thrash.

Spalding continues its season at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against 1-4 region opponent Dutchtown.

LADY JAGS FALL: Shaquoria Reid led Spalding High with 19 points in a 53-50 loss against Region 4-AAAA opponent Woodland-Stockbridge at home Friday night, playing out a hard fought game only to lose in the final minutes.

Spalding (4-3 overall, 2-1 Region 4-AAAA Dib. B) started the game poorly, but managed to hold Woodland's (7-1, 4-0 Region 4-AAAA Div. A) star 6-foot-2 center Nicole Findura to 0-5 shooting in the first half. The rest of the Lady Wolfpack suffered sub-par shooting performances as well, but they controlled the ball, nearly doubling the Jaguars' miniscule 17 shot attempts to take a 31-27 lead going into halftime.

With 7:00 left in the fourth quarter, Spalding got its first lead from a Grenishia Daniel lay-up to make the score 41-39. At 5:53, Wolfpack guard Care Bacon hit a spot up 3, taking the score back 44-43 Woodland. Six-foot-2 Spalding center Desiree Corbin stepped up and knocked down a shot to reclaim the lead at 45-44 just 30 seconds later.

At the 2:21 mark and down by one, Reid forced a turnover on a 2-on-1 fast break and fed the ball to Daniel for an easy layup, taking Spalding's last lead of the night at 47-46. Morgan Jones, Woodland's leading scorer, was able to silence the Jaguar crowd by swishing a knockdown 3, resulting in a 49-47 lead with 1:44 left and stealing any chance of a Spalding comeback for the rest of the game.

Rounding out SHS's leaqding scorers were Reid with 19 points, Desiree Corbin 11, Twandalette Cotton 6 and Daniel chipped in 6.

Spalding continues its season at 6 p.m. Tuesday as it hosts region foe Dutchtown.
