The Griffin Christian Crusaders lost a battle of ranked teams last Saturday afternoon, falling to the Dominion Christian Knights 66-55 in GISA non-region action at GCHS.

Dominion, the No. 4 state-ranked team in GISA Class AAA, had a huge spurt in the second quarter and that sealed the game away against GC, the No. 4 state-ranked team in GISA Class AA. GC lost its second straight game to fall to 4-4 overall.

Griffin Christian led 20-19 after one quarter but the Crusaders were outscored 26-8 in the second to fall behind 45-28 at the half and had to play catch-up from there. GC led until six minutes remained in the second quarter.

“We lost the game in those six minutes,” said Crusaders head coach Mic Savage. “We struggled with our man-to-man defense early in the game.”

Once again, GC ran into a hot-shooting team. The Knights were outstanding in the first half — they sank 15 of 20 shots, including 8 of 10 from the 3-point line, and made 7 of 9 free throws. It was similar to GC’s loss on Nov. 26 to Grace Christian, which shot lights-out at their place in Fayetteville.

GC trailed 53-43 heading into the fourth and got within 9 points in the final stanza, but the Crusaders would get no closer. Soon Savage rested his starters and emptied the bench to avoid getting anyone hurt before next week’s slate of games.

“The ironic part is that I don’t think we played as bad as the game looked. We outplayed them in the second half,” Savage said.

Aaron McCray and Wil Savage led GC with 16 points each, with Wil dishing out 6 assists. Jonathan Hammond chipped in 9 points for the Crusaders, who host GISA Region 4-AA opponent Furtah Prep today at 7:30 p.m.

Furtah swept the season series with GC last year, winning 64-55 at GC and 72-68 at Furtah.

Mount de Sales 73, GC girls 24 (Friday):

MACON — The Mount de Sales Lady Cavaliers were too much for the Griffin Christian Lady Crusaders, whipping them 73-24 last Friday evening in GISA non-region action on the road.

Brittany Brogdon led GC with 9 points and Lily Hammond chipped in 5. Katy Hammond led GC with 5 assists and Brittany Foster led the team with 4 rebounds. GC lost its third straight game to fall to 3-4, but hopes to rebound today at 6 p.m. when it hosts GISA Region 4-AA foe Furtah Prep.

GC swept Furtah last year, winning 49-10 at GC and 51-47 at Furtah. It was the Lady Crusaders' only wins last season.
