The Griffin Bears basketball team fell behind early and rallied late, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Henry County Warhawks Saturday night in non-region action at The House.

Henry held on to defeat Griffin (4-2) by the score of 61-56 Saturday, giving the Bears their second straight loss after a season-opening four-game win streak.

Griffin tied Henry 12-all after one quarter and trailed 28-22 at the half. The Bears also trailed 48-39 heading into the fourth quarter.

Griffin made a serious fourth-quarter run. Anforne’ Stroud’s two 3-pointers got the Bears within four points at 59-55 with 38 seconds left in the game and Demaree Walker’s free throw cut the lead to 59-56 11 seconds later. But that was as close as the Bears would get, as the Warhawks sank two more free throws for the final 61-56 margin.

Walker led Griffin with 12 points, followed by Jaquez Parks with 11 and J.R. Ellis with 9. Griffin gets back into action today against Region 4-AAAA foe Locust Grove at 7:30 p.m. at The House.

Henry County 47, Griffin girls 45 (Saturday):

The Griffin Lady Bears fell behind 16-7 after the first quarter and made a furious comeback, but it wasn’t enough as they lost to the Henry County Ladyhawks 47-45 Saturday evening in non-region action at The House.

Griffin’s two-game win streak ended, dropping it to 2-4 overall.

Griffin’s comeback bid started in the fourth quarter. The Lady Bears worked hard to get back in the game and took the lead on a steal and layup from Aurelia Mangham to give Griffin the 45-44 lead with 1:00 left. Henry’s Taylor Cistrunk hit a free throw to tie the game at 45 seconds later. After Henry County got a jump-ball tie up with 8.6 seconds left, all Griffin had to do was play strong defense and the teams would be headed to overtime.

Unfortunately for Griffin, Henry County shooter Camreen Hurne was fouled as she was shooting a 3-pointer with less than a second remaining and she made two of the three free throws to win the game, 47-45.

Shacoria Jones led Griffin with 12 points, followed by Mangham and Chelsea Prather with 8 points each.

Griffin gets back into action today against Region 4-AAAA foe Locust Grove at 6 p.m. at The House.
