That’s exactly what happened to the Griffin Christian Crusaders as they fell to the Arlington Christian Eagles 83-70 in GISA Region 4-AA action Tuesday night on the road.
“They shot the ball lights out and they just blitzed us. They couldn’t miss,” said Crusaders head coach Mic Savage. “We tried everything to slow Arlington down — zone, man-to-man, box — nothing worked. They cranked 3-pointers all night; they shoot unbelievably well in their home gym.”
No. 5 state-ranked GC falls to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in region play with the loss and coach Savage will have to wait until next year to try and get his first win ever in Arlington’s gym.
“I’ve never won at Arlington. I’d really like to get that monkey off our backs and win there. They are good at home,” coach Savage said.
Griffin Christian hung in with Arlington early, only trailing 23-20 after one quarter and tying the game at 36-all with a few minutes remaining in the second quarter. That’s when the Eagles blitz began - Arlington outscored GC 12-2 in those last few minutes to lead 48-38 at halftime and roll from there.
The Eagles shot the ball well and outscored GC 22-13 in the third to take a 70-51 lead into the final stanza and salt the game away.
“Defensively, they pressed us but we handled that well,” coach Savage said. “We did rush some layup attempts and missed those, however.”
Wil Savage led GC with 15 points, followed by 12 each from Amir Hightower and Jonathan Hammond. Aaron McCray added 11 points, 10 assists and 5 rebounds and Taylor Dunn chipped in 10 points for GC, which is off until the Heritage Tournament on Dec. 28-29 in Newnan.
