Funeral services for the 9-year-old girl found dead Saturday will be this Thursday.

Funeral services for Skylar Jade Dials will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, in the sanctuary of the Griffin Center Point Church, 1427 U.S. 41 Bypass South. Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Haisten McCullough Funeral Home, 1155 Everee Inn Road, Griffin.

Griffin Center Point Church Pastor Tracy Stone and Landmark Church of God Pastor Rebecca Brannon will officiate Thursday’s service, with burial to follow in the old section of Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, to honor of Skylar’s love for animals, the family requests that donations be made to the Griffin Spalding County Humane Society or to an animal charity of your choice in her memory.

Skylar was a 4th-grade student at Orrs Elementary School. She loved to draw and was an exceptional little artist, according to the obituary, and she will be remembered for her love of animals and for her “larger than life” personality.

“It’s a tragic situation,” said Spalding County Sheriff Wendell Beam. “The family of Skylar Dials wants to extend their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the community for all of their assistance during this tragic time. The family is requesting the community’s understanding at this time to honor their privacy during the coming days. I ask that the community keeps the family in their prayers.”

Skylar was reported missing Friday and her body was located in woods behind her home about 2 a.m. Saturday by a search team, according to the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office. She had left home, cutting through the woods as she had done before to visit a friend at 11 a.m., Friday, and was reported missing about 3:45 p.m.

A neighbor, Shane Clifton Collett, 40, of 678 Yarbrough Mill Road, Williamson, was arrested Saturday on charges of murder, kidnapping and concealing a death. Collett is being held without bond in the Spalding County Detention Center.

Collett lived at the same home Skylar was going to visit, but a relationship between him and her friend has not been determined Beam said.

“The only information I have is they were neighbors and the two young girls would play together,” Beam said. “And it was common for her to use the clearing, a path to go between the two homes.”

Beam said the body was not located along that path, but was located in the opposite direction, concealed under brush, in the woods behind her home.

Her body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta for an autopsy. Beam said the results on the autopsy and a cause of death were not expected until later this week.
