RIVERDALE — Shaquoria Reid scored a game-high 20 points to lead Spalding High to a spectacular comeback that came up short 52-50 Friday night when Region 4-AAAA Div. A first-place Riverdale made a shot at the buzzer.

Riverdale’s Erica Burnham hit the game-winning shot as Riverdale (8-8 overall, 5-1 subregion) won for the second time in the last three games and co-third-place Spalding (8-5, 2-3) had a four-game losing streak snapped in its first game back since the holiday break.

Spalding, which trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half, managed to take the lead, 47-46, on a shot by Reid with 2:23 left to play it the game. Spalding then increased its lead to three, 49-46, on a shot by Jasmine Holland with 2:05 and then four, 50-46, on a free throw by Reid with 1:11 to play in a game where Riverdale didn’t score between the 4:05 and 1:05 marks of the fourth quarter as they missed four shots from the floor, another from the free-throw line and turned the ball over twice during that stretch.

However, then it was Riverdale’s time to get hot as the Lady Raiders scored a basket at the1:04 mark and made a free throw at the :24 and :12 marks to tie the game 50-all. When Riverdale missed the second of two free throws on the later, Spalding secured the rebound and was fouled with :08.5 left where it missed a pair of free throws, paving the way for Riverdale to secure the rebound and get down court for the game-winning shot in a game where Spalding missed a shot from the floor, two from the free-throw line and turned the ball over twice in the final minute.

Rounding out the game’s leading scores were Spalding’s Twandalette Cotton with 11 and Riverdale’s Toni Thomas with 11. Burnham ended with 8 points.

The Lady Jags continue their season at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home against Jonesboro (9-4, 4-2), which defeated Griffin 53-48 Friday night.
