Ellen Doss Milling

May 14, 1934—Jan. 8, 2013

Ellen Doss Milling, born May 14, 1934; died peacefully on Jan. 8, 2013.

Mrs. Milling was born in Atlanta to the late Cortie and Vivian Doss. She attended Washington Seminary Girls School in Atlanta, Duke University, and graduated from Emory University. Mrs. Milling was a member of the Omicron Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi at Duke University. In 1954, Ellen transferred to Emory and founded the Adelphean Society with the goal that it would become Alpha Delta Pi. On May 9, 1959, this Adelphean Society became the Delta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi at Emory University.

Upon her graduation, Ellen moved to Griffin to pursue a career as an elementary school teacher. It was there that she met her future husband, Charles Gordon Milling Jr., who with his father, owned Milling Motor Company. In August of 1958, Ellen and Gordon were married and were happily married for 47 years until Mr. Milling’s death in March 2005.

Throughout her life, Mrs. Milling served as an active volunteer in the Griffin community and her church. She was a member of the Utility Club of Griffin, The Garden Club of Griffin, Griffin Country Club, Historical Society and First United Methodist Church. After her children were grown, Ellen resumed her teaching career and taught third grade at Jackson Road Elementary for almost 10 years until her retirement in 1992.

Everyone that knew Ellen loved her and appreciated her devotion to her family and friends. She will also be remembered as the epitome of a strong southern lady that suffered unimaginable heartache, yet always remained gracious and kind.

She is survived by her daughter Vivian Milling Jackson; son-in-law James Stanley Jackson; and four granddaughters, Ellen Hope Jackson, Merrill Frances Jackson, Mary Corinne Milling and India Cawley Milling. Mrs. Milling was also predeceased by her beloved son Charles Gordon Milling III and granddaughter Terry Gordon Milling.

The family would also like to extend special thanks to her caregivers for the past few years, Linda Johnson and Mary Berry. They were not only caregivers but special friends to Miss Ellen.
