Mr. J. Ralph Akins passed away Tuesday, January 08, 2013, at the age of 87. He was born in Bulloch County, Georgia, February 17, 1925, to the late Lewis A. and Manona Brannen Akins. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Gladys Bowdoin Akins, in January 2012, and his brothers Harold M. Akins, L. Lamar Akins, William B. Akins, and his sister Mary Sue Akins.
He attended Gordon Military College in Barnesville, Georgia, until he was called into active military service in 1943. He served in the US Army Corps of Engineers until December 1945, spending about one year of service in France, Belgium, and Germany until the war ended in Europe.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Griffin, Kiwanis of Griffin, and the Griffin Area Habitat for Humanity. He was honored by the Griffin Exchange Club as Man of the Year in 2005.
On January 1, 1946, He and his brothers, Harold and Lamar, who were also WWII veterans, each purchased a 25% ownership from their father in Akins Feed & Seed Co. in Barnesville. Later they opened branches of the business in Thomaston (1949) and Griffin (1953). The Thomaston Location was later sold, and the Barnesville and Griffin locations are now operated by third and fourth generations of the Akins family. They have been dealers for Ralston-Purina, Co. (now Purina Mills) since 1949 and for Snapper Lawn Equipment for about 50 years.
He is survived by his daughters Cheryl (Jim) Matlock and Betty Anne (Billy) Avery and grandchildren Derek (Cathy) George, Jamie (Dana) Matlock, Jill (Stan) Matlock-Carter, Amelia George Alexander. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren Chance Matlock-Carter, Jon Elliot Matlock-Carter, Westley Matlock-Carter, Austin Matlock, Bryce Matlock and Chloe Renei George. Mr. Akins also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who enriched his life including his caregivers; Teasa Crawford, Milicent Crawford, Jane Smith, Joyce Cleveland, Adesia Cloud, Patty Harris and Sarina Favors.
Friends may visit the family between 6:00pm and 8:00 pm on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. A memorial service will be conducted at First Baptist Church, Griffin on Sunday, January 13, 2012 at 2pm. Dr. Bill Hardee will officiate. Mrs. Barbara Bailey

Mrs. Barbara P. Bailey age 74 of Griffin, passed away on January 7, 2013 at Brightmoor Nursing Center.
Mrs. Bailey was born on June 2, 1938. She is preceded in death by her parents Robert Reid Powledge and Gwynn Alene Powledge, husband Marshall Frasier Bailey. Mrs. Bailey was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Robby and Jeanne Bailey, Gary and Kristie Bailey; 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; sister, Rebecca Hill; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services will be conducted on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. in the chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Interment will be in Senoia City Cemetery. Friends may visit the family following the service. Reverend Chris Holdorf and Reverend John Nance will officiate.

Mrs. Lynn Scott Dickey age 66 of Griffin, passed away on January 7, 2013 at Brightmoor Hospice.
Mrs. Dickey was born on September 25, 1946 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas William Scott and the late Willie Ruth Scott. Mrs. Dickey formerly worked at Lewis Accounting Firm in Valdosta and was a member of the Sun City Peachtree Women’s Golf Association.
Survivors include husband, Jerry Dickey; daughters, Jennifer Lovell Eschenhorst and husband Uwe, daughter, Amy Lovell Baker and husband Jeff; grandchildren, Clint and Cohen Eschenhorst; step daughter, Allison Dickey Stalvey and husband John; sister, Barbara Louise Scott; many cousins.

Mrs. Irma L. Colvin

Mrs. Irma Lucille Colvin, age 101, passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Westbury Medical Care Home.
Mrs. Colvin was born in Lexington, Kentucky on July 9, 1911. She is preceded in death by parents, Ira Millard Tipton and Mittie Lucile Watson Tipton. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by husband, Wendell Coleman Colvin. Mrs. Colvin was a loving mother and grandmother.
Survivors include daughters, Nancy Wilson and Linda K. McComic of TX, 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren.
A memorial service for Mrs. Irma L. Colvin will be held at a later time.
