Friday’s win helped second-place Griffin (10-11 overall, 7-5 subregion) snap out of the doldrums just in time to face crosstown rival Spalding High 6 p.m., today at SHS. Fifth-place Upson-Lee (6-14, 4-8), meanwhile, continues to struggle as it lost for the fourth time in its last five outings.
Griffin dominated Friday’s game early on leading 6-5 at the end of the first quarter, 16-10 at the half and 27-23 heading into the fourth quarter where Jones took over, taking the wind out of Upson-Lee’s sails.
Jasmine Davis led Upson-Lee with 10 points. Teammates Demeshia Russell and Kiashana Carter totaled 8 and 6 points, respectively. Rounding out Griffin’s top scorers were Alexis Roberts and Victoria Middlebrooks with 6 and 5 points, respectively.
The victory allowed Griffin to split the regular season series against the Lady Knights. Although Griffin won 42-34 Jan. 8 on the court at Upson-Lee, the Lady Bears learned a few days later they had played a junior varsity player too many quarters and promptly reported the indiscretion, thus forfeiting the game.
Griffin heads into today’s game looking to sweep Spalding, which it defeated by three points in a close game earlier this month at GHS.
