THOMASTON — Twandalette Cotton scored 10 points to lead Spalding High in a 51-38 regular-season ending loss Tuesday night at Upson-Lee in Region 4-AAAA Div. B girls basketball that left the Lady Jags tied for last place in the subregion with Upson-Lee.

It was the second loss in a row for Spalding (11-12 overall, 5-10 subregion) which heads to the region tournament next week having lost four of its last five. Upson-Lee (7-17, 5-10), meanwhile, snapped a four-game losing streak and avenged a 52-46 overtime loss at Spalding on Jan. 18 to split the regular season series with the Lady Jags.

With several Upson-Lee players benched in the first half for disciplinary reasons, Spalding took a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Thereafter, the game stood tied 18-all at the half and 32-all heading into the fourth quarter where Upson-Lee broke it open outscoring the Lady Jags 19-6 for the victory.

The Lady Knight had three players in double figures, including Ke’ondra Hasbrook (17 points and 17 rebounds), Kiashona Carter (13) and Jasmine Davis (11). Cotton was Spalding’s only player in double figures. Rounding out Spalding’s top three scorers were Shaquoria Reid (8) and Grenishia Daniel (7).

The region meeting to determine the final seeding for the region tournament will be tonight at Eagle’s Landing High. It is believed Spalding will win the tiebreaker against Upson-Lee — which is the record against teams from subregion A — to finish as the No. 5 seed. That means Spalding will open the region tournament Monday at Dutchtown against the No. 4 seed from Region 4-AAAA Div. A. At press time Tuesday, it was unclear which team was the No. 4 seed in Div. A.

Regardless, later rounds in the tournament will be played at Woodland-Stockbridge next week — including the state-qualifying round on Tuesday. The Lady Jags will have to win two games to clinch a state playoff berth.
