The Griffin Christian Lady Crusaders basketball team came close to ending its long losing streak, but the visiting Harvester Christian Ladyhawks had other ideas.

Harvester’s girls made their free throws down the stretch and pulled out a close one, defeating the Lady Crusaders 46-40 Friday evening in GISA Region 4-AA action at home on Senior Night.

The Lady Crusaders lost their 12th straight game to finish the regular season at 7-18 overall and 1-11 in region play while Harvester improves to 8-14, 3-9.

The Lady Crusaders only scored 3 points in the first quarter, but they were only down 10-3 at the end of the first quarter. There was more action in the second quarter as both teams traded baskets. Harvester led 23-12 until GC’s Chelsey Deaton converted a three-point play to cut the lead to 23-15 with 1:54 remaining in the half. Harvester ended up taking a 27-18 lead into the half.

The Lady Crusaders got down 33-22 with 2:49 remaining in the third quarter when they buckled down on defense. GC scored six straight points to cut the lead to 33-28 and went into the final quarter trailing 34-28.

GC trailed 36-28 when Brittany Brogdon made one of two free throws and senior Brittany Foster made a layup off the Brogdon miss to cut the Harvester lead to 36-31 with 5:14 remaining. Foster then hit another shot to get GC within 3 at 36-33 at 4:41. But Harvester’s Markie Dean converted a 3-point play to put the Ladyhawks up 6 at 39-33 and they held GC at bay for the rest of the way. Katy Hammond’s steal and layup minutes later got GC within 3 again at 43-40 but that would be the last points it would score.

Foster led the Lady Crusaders with 16 points and 20 rebounds in her final home game. Deaton added 8 points and Katy Hammond tallied 5 points, 6 assists, 6 steals and 10 deflections. Dean led Harvester with 20 points and Brittany Law chipped in 10.

GC senior basketball girls honored after the game included Foster, Hannah Branham, Allison Miller and Callie Wilson.
