The Spalding High Jaguars opened their 2013 season with a bang — literally.

With Spalding leading 3-0, Anson Link and Powell Krepps each smashed two-run homers in the second inning to stake the Jags to a 7-0 lead en route to defeating the Sandy Creek Patriots 15-5 in 6 innings Tuesday evening in non-region action at Jaguar Field.

Krepps was the winning pitcher for Spalding (1-0), giving up 4 runs on 3 hits in 3 innings in the home opener. He struck out 5 and walked 2. Logan Pryor and Clay Golden also pitched well for the Jags. Krepps, a senior, helped himself at the plate as well, going 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBIs.

Link went 2 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs, which is a turnaround from Spalding’s scrimmage game against Jackson last Friday where the Jags had to scratch and claw to win the game 2-1. Spalding belted 12 hits Tuesday against the Patriots.

The Patriots cut the lead to 7-4 in the top of the third inning, but the Jags repsonded with 4 more runs in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 11-4 and basically seal the game. Dustin Tardy started the third-inning rally with an RBI single.

Parker Powell, Alec Hayes (2 RBIs) and Chase Pruitt (1 RBI) also had 2 hits each for the Jags, who get back into action Friday at Eagle’s Landing Christian in non-region play on the road at 6 p.m.
