COLLEGE PARK — The Spalding High soccer teams breezed past North Clayton on Friday in their Region 4-AAAA openers, the No. 7-state ranked Lady Jags winning 10-0 and the Jags following suit in the nightcap 3-0.

Evan Davis scored 2:18 into the later match, Patrick Marcoux made it 2-0 on a penalty kick with 4:04 left in the first half and Jake Mathis, assisted by Evan Davis, put the final nail into the coffin 5:40 into the second half as the Spalding High Jags (2-0 overall, 1-0 region) remained undefeated and the North Clayton Eagles (0-2, 0-2) remained winless.

The girls match was a lot less dramatic as the Lady Jags (3-0, 1-0) not only remained undefeated but also won their third match in a row by a count of 10-0 while the North Clayton Lady Eagles (0-2, 0-2) remained winless. Eight different Lady Jags scored or recorded assists in the match that was shortened because of the high school mercy rule.

Li Anne Harris broke a scoreless tie eight minutes into the match as she scored the first of her two goals on the night off an assist from Kristen Argila. Reece McIver recorded a hat trick to further Spalding’s cause. Two of those came on assists from Harris and Haylee McMahan.

McMahan also scored a pair of goals on assists from Harris and Ann Marie Martinez. Senior Laural Cobb and Argila completed the scoring in the half as the Lady Jags led 9-0 at the break.

Freshman Marissa Hendrix scored the final goal of the night on an assist from Cobb less than 10 minutes into the second half.

“We’re happy to get this win in the Region,” said coach Wayne Gardner. “We are working hard to improve with each training session and with each game.”

The Jags and Lady Jags each return to action on Thursday in the Bulldog Cup Tournament in Forsyth, with the Lady Jags starting at 5:30 p.m. against host Mary Persons High School and the Jags at 7:30 p.m. against First Presbyterian Day.
