RIVERDALE — The Griffin High Bears baseball team erupted for 13 runs in the first inning and made that stand, dispatching the Riverdale Raiders 20-10 in five innings Wednesday evening in Region 4-AAAA action on the road.

The Bears keep their win streak intact, improving to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in region play while Riverdale falls to 1-6, 1-2.

Raiders starting pitcher Brandon Leverette had a rocky first inning. He walked several Bears and gave up some big hits to Griffin which led to their big inning. Bears first baseman Daniel Gooden had 5 RBIs in the inning, getting an RBI single and a nice grand slam to right field to give the Bears a 10-0 cushion. Griffin DH Telly Sloan then had a 2-run double and he eventually scored for the 13-0 margin.

Griffin looked like it would put the Raiders away in three innings, but the Raiders scratched and clawed and extended the game. The Raiders scored 2 runs in the first to make the score 13-2, but Griffin scored twice to make the score 15-2 in the top of the second. In the bottom half of the inning, Riverdale’s Jerome Holmes got a rally started with a nice bunt single and the Raiders scored to make it 15-3. Then Tykeem Cooper smacked a 3-run triple to cut the Bears lead to 15-6. The inning ended with Griffin leading 15-7.

The Bears stifled any hopes of a Raiders rally, scoring four more runs in the third for a 19-7 lead. Riverdale scored 3 more runs to cut the lead to 19-10 in the fourth and Griffin added one more run in the top of the fifth for the final 20-10 margin.

Javier Romero went 2-for 3 for the Raiders. John Pope and several other Bears had two or more hits each for Griffin, which gets back in action Friday at region foe Dutchtown at 6 p.m.
