Spalding drops its first game of the season to fall to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in region play while Dutchtown improves to 3-3, 2-1.
Spalding had a 4-2 lead with one out in the bottom of the seventh, when Dutchtown eventually loaded the bases via a hit and two walks. Spalding then uncorked a wild pitch and the Bulldogs runner at third base scored to cut the Jags’ lead to 4-3. The tying run advanced to third base and the winning run made it to second on the wild pitch.
Spalding became the victim of bad luck after that. Dutchtown’s Jesse Christensen was the next batter and he sent a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Thomas Fantroy from third, tying the game at 4-all. As Fantroy headed home, Dutchtown’s Keleen Walters tagged from second base on his way to third as the Spalding cut-off man tried to throw Walters out. The ball inexplicably hit the second-base umpire and rolled to the shallow outfield fence, allowing Walters to score the game-winning run for Dutchtown.
The Jags had five hits and starting pitcher Parker Powell struck out eight Bulldogs. The Jags were undone by eight walks from their pitchers in the contest.
“You can’t give outs away and that’s what we did against Dutchtown,” said Jags head coach Mickey Moody. “We didn’t play to the best of our ability, but we can make it up with an important region game at Eagle’s Landing.”
Jags starting catcher Evan Skipper was hit by a pitch on his throwing hand in the first inning and left the game, replaced by Koleman Evans. Moody reported no fractures in his hand, but Skipper will be evaluated further and is doubtful for today’s game at Eagle’s Landing, which is slated for 6 p.m.
