Third-year Spalding High tennis coach Greg Crawford must be starting to wonder what the players on his team look like. He hasn't seen much of them, at least the starters, in live action during a match the last two weeks.

Spalding had a Region 4-AAAA match Thursday at home canceled and rescheduled for Wednesday against Eagle's Landing. It was done as a courtesy to accommodate the school's run to the state finals in boys basketball. It was also the fifth match the Jags (1-4) and Lady Jags (3-2) have had to cancel for one reason or another — including two because of rain, another because of a scheduling mixup and yet another out of courtesy — since the start of the season.

"We haven't played any home region matches yet," said Crawford.

In an effort to begin making up matches, the Jags (1-4) and Lady Jags (3-2) will play every day Monday through Friday next week.

"If it rains we'll have to start playing on Saturdays just to get them in," added Crawford.

Spalding's schedule next week includes matches at First Presbyterian Day in Macon on Monday, at Locust Grove on Tuesday, home against Eagle's Landing on Wednesday and at Woodland-Stockbridge on Thursday before coming home to take on crosstown rival Griffin on Friday.

With matches on March 19 at home against Dutchtown, March 20 at Jonesboro and March 21 at home against Upsone-Lee, the following week doesn't afford the team much rest either.

Spalding played at the annual Peachtree City Tournament on Friday and Saturday but without most of its starters.

"We had three starters," said Crawford, noting the total number of starters his boys and girls teams had in the lineup combined. "It was like going to a gun fight without any bullets."

Some were tending to duties for a prom, while others were attending a church outing, according to Crawford. The boys teams lost 3-2 to East Coweta and Brookstone, while the girls team beat Rockdale 5-0 and lost to defending state champ Starr's Mill 5-0.
