“This is big for these guys to start getting a few region wins,” said Fowler, in his second year coaching the Griffin High tennis teams. “It puts a little pep in their step.”
Scoring points for the Bears (2-4 overall, 2-2 region) were Randy Chastain (8-1), Mahlon Robinson (8-0) and Bradley Durden (8-0) in No. 1-3 singles, respectively, while the No. 1 doubles team of Ricky Lewis and Christian Hughley won 8-0 to score another team point and the No. 2 doubles team of Cameron Powell and Taric Jones picked up another team point with a win by forfeit.
The Lady Jags (4-2, 3-1) won their second in a row and for the third time in the last four matches.
Scoring points for the Lady Bears were Rebecca Rose Hill (8-1), Sarah Mallett (8-2) and Forrest Dukes (8-2) in No. 1-3 singles, respectively, while the No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Brown and Priscilla Perez won 8-0 and the No. 2 doubles team of Laura Harness and Kalesia Henderson picked up another team point with a win by forfeit.
“I”m really proud of the kids,” said Fowler. “I’m glad to see their hard work over the summer is paying off in a big way.”
Griffin High continues its season with region matches next week on Tuesday at North Clayton and Wednesday at Woodland before coming home to take on Jonesboro on Thursday.
