Griffin High’s Trey Mallett hurls a pitch March 2 at The Bears’ Den against Washington County. Mallett threw a complete game Friday night at Dutchtown.
“Trey pitched a good game — he battled,” said first-year Bears head coach Kevin Mobley. “We just didn’t give him any support.”
It was the first loss of the year for Griffin (6-1 overall, 3-1 region), which fell into a three-way tie for third place in the region with Dutchtown (4-3, 3-1) and Upson-Lee (4-4, 3-1). Dutchtown, meanwhile, won its second in a row — both by a run in the last inning — to join the fray for third place in the 11-team region which is led by first-place Locust Grove (4-2, 4-0) and second-place Spalding (6-1, 4-1).
Dutchtown scored in the bottom of the first. Griffin, however, took a 2-1 lead in the middle innings on a wild pitch during an inning where their first run scored when Cornelius Randolph hit a lead off triple and came home on John Pope’s RBI single.
The Bulldogs retook the lead thereafter before Griffin tied it in the sixth only to watch Dutchtown win it in the bottom of the seventh.
Griffin was playing without its leading hitter as well as its starting center fielder.
Both were nursing injuries.
GHS continues its season 5:55 p.m. Monday at home before hitting the road Tuesday to take on the Jonesboro Cardinals on Tuesday and then the Newnan Cougars on Wednesday before combing back home to take on Upson-Lee 5:55 p.m. Friday.
