The Spalding County Fire Department responded to about a dozen calls Monday night as storms went through after 6:30 p.m. Spalding County Fire Chief Kenny West said most of the calls were trees or lines down, along with a couple of transformers sparking, catching the power poles on fire.
According to the call log from the county Fire Department, there were two pole fires, two tree on line calls and three lines down calls. West said there were heavy rains reported at the Norton and Blalock fire stations, but he said most of the damage reports were south and west of the county, in Lamar, Pike and Meriwether counties.
Severe weather warnings were issued about that time Monday night, with high winds, straight-line winds and damage reported in Pike County. Pike County Emergency Management Director Jimmy Totten said schools were closed Tuesday in Pike County because roads couldn’t be cleared in time.
“We had 50-some trees down across roads, 17 lines down and four residences sustaining minor damage,” he said, “along with several barns and outbuildings destroyed.”
Totten said most of the damage was around the Concord and the Peytonville Road areas.
“Our Delta Alert system did work,” Totten said, “as alerts were sent out.”
He said he didn’t know how many residents were signed up for the reverse 911 alert system, as some participants may have more than one number registered, but he said “there are about 6,000 phone numbers in there.”
There were no injuries reported as a result of the storms, West and Totten said.
