A 15-year-old Spalding County girl is dead following a shooting Saturday night on Amberwood Court.

Authorities say the girl died as a result of one gunshot wound.

The unidentified girl, a Spalding High School student, was transported by LifeFlight to the emergency room of Atlanta Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.

Capt. Tony Ranieri, chief investigator of the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit, said one 16-year-old male has been taken into custody in the incident and is being held in the Griffin Regional Youth Detention Center.

Deputies from the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office spent Saturday night searching the area for the missing murder weapon, which was not recovered.

“I’ve got the Dive Team (the Pike-Spalding Underwater Evidence Recovery Team) going out there tomorrow morning to see if we can locate the gun,” Ranieri said.

The victim’s body has been taken to the state crime lab in Decatur for autopsy.

Authorities are withholding the victim’s identity at this time, pending the notification of family members.
