As the calendar turned from July to August on the local and state sports scenes, prep football and softball took center stage in Griffin.
On Aug. 7, San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds hit his 756th home run to pass Hank Aaron as the top home run hitter in baseball history.
On Aug. 9, Jenni-Lynne Smith pitched six innings to lead Spalding to a 2-0 win against East Coweta in the Lady Jaguars’s scrimmage.
On Aug. 11, Griffin High School’s Tim Beckham was named MVP in the Aflac All-American Baseball Classic at San Diego State.
On Aug. 17, Griffin High School’s football team defeated Newnan 10-7 in a preseason scrimmage at Griffin’s Memorial Stadium. Quarterback Marcus Waller had a 21-yard touchdown run for the Bears’ only touchdown of the game.
On Aug. 18, Spalding High School’s football team fell to LaGrange 15-3 in a preseason scrimmage at Griffin’s Memorial Stadium. Kicker Will Jeffcoat hit a 34-yard field goal for the Jaguars’ only score of the game.
On the same day, Spalding High School’s softball team opened the annual Diamond Classic by defeating Peach County 2-0 and falling to Newton 4-1. Griffin High School opened the tournament by defeating Lamar County 10-2 and losing to Georgia Military 3-2.
On Aug. 19, Spalding High School’s softball team swept its three games of the Diamond Classic, beating Jackson 2-0, Crawford County 11-2 and Griffin 5-0. The Lady Bears, meanwhile, defeated Crawford County 6-0 before losing to Jackson 2-0 and Spalding.
On Aug. 21, Griffin High School’s football team opened the season ranked No. 6 in the Associated Press poll and No. 8 in the Georgia High School Football Magazine poll.
On the same day, Cember Carmichael hit a grand slam to lead Spalding High School’s softball team to a 9-0 win against Mary Persons.
On Aug. 23, Griffin High School’s softball team won its home opener 14-0 against Lovejoy as starting pitcher Kristen Gregory struck out 14 of the 15 batters she faced in the game.
On Aug. 25, Spalding High School’s boys and girls cross country teams were the top Class AAA teams in the Jaguar Invitational. Will Ficklen won the boys meet with a time of 16:47.
On Aug. 27, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick pleaded guilty to dogfighting.
On Aug. 28, Smith threw her second no-hitter of the season as Spalding High School’s softball team defeated Woodland 10-0 at home.
On Aug. 30, Alan Frazier, Marcus Waller and Kentorius Jackson each scored touchdowns as Griffin High School’s football team opened the season with a 23-0 win against Lithia Springs at Griffin’s Memorial Stadium.
On Aug. 31, G.T. Holmes scored two touchdown as Spalding High School’s football team opened the season with a 30-6 win against Pike County at Griffin’s Memorial Stadium.
On the same day, Griffin Christian High School’s football team dropped its first game of the season 20-7 to Monroe Academy.
On the same day, Tedra Alford and Gregory combined to pitch a perfect game as Griffin High School’s softball team defeated North Clayton 15-0.
On the same day, Smith tossed a one-hitter as Spalding High School’s softball team defeated Henry County 9-0.
