Rhonda Zonca died Wednesday morning following an automobile accident at 3:24 a.m. near Spalding Regional Medical Center.

Officers with the Griffin Police Department responding to the single-vehicle accident discovered a 2002 Chevrolet Venture driven by Zonca which had struck a telephone pole at 541 S. Eighth St.

“It appears that the driver lost consciousness prior to the collision and that the collision was a result of the vehicle being uncontrolled,” said Jeremy Bennett, a traffic officer with the GPD. Bennett said the vehicle appeared to have slowed down on its own prior to drifting into the utility pole.

Police officials say there was very little damage to either the vehicle or the utility pole and that the collision is not being considered as a cause of death in the incident. The collision is instead being considered the result of an unknown medical complication experienced by Zonca. Bryan Clanton, public information officer for the GPD, said an investigation to determine the cause of Zonca’s death is ongoing at this time.
