The Spalding High girls basketball team’s push to finish the regular season in the top two in the subregion was dealt a serious blow when two shots in the waning seconds didn’t fall Tuesday night at home in a 49-46 loss to Eagle’s Landing.
Shay Williams scored 15 points, Elem Ibiam added 10 and Shakeva Richards chipped in with nine to lead Spalding (13-8 overall, 5-4 Region 4-AAA Div. A) on a night where the Lady Jags had a four-game win streak snapped.
Eagle’s Landing (11-10, 5-4) swept the regular season series between the two teams with the victory as it snapped a three-game losing streak with the win.
Spalding, which was third in the subregion entering the game, dictated the pace early against ELHS, which was fourth in the subregion entering the game. The Lady Jags led 15-12 after the first quarter, 33-23 at the half and 37-33 entering the fourth quarter.
But ELHS made a three-point shot with 7:26 to play in the fourth to get to within one of the Lady Jags and another shot with 6:43 to take the lead. However, they game deciding basket came on a layup with 33 seconds to play. SHS had two shots from just under the basket with less than 10 seconds to play that missed the mark.
The top two teams in the subregion - Mary Persons (14-6, 5-2) and Henry County (13-8, 5-2) for now - receive a bye in the opening round of the region playoffs.
