Senior Kristen Gregory scored three first half goals while Hannah Brown scored three goals and had an assist to lead Griffin High School’s girls soccer team to an 11-0 win Tuesday against Mundy’s Mill at Griffin.
Mary Kathryn Willis scored a pair of goals, Katy Penley had a goal and two assists, Jenna Flintcroft had a goal and an assist and Jodi Jacobs scored a goal for the Lady Bears (11-2-0 overall, 6-0-0 Region 4-AAAA North).
“It was another dominating win for us,” Griffin coach Jerry Fields said. “But we did a lot of things well tonight. I was pleased with our passing and of course the defense.”
After being shutout in a 7-0 loss to Upson-Lee on March 24, the Lady Bears offense recovered by jumping out to a 10-0 lead at halftime. Griffin kept the ball on the Mundy’s Mill (0-8-1, 0-2-0) side of the field for most of the game to preserve its 11th shutout victory this season.
Following the game, Griffin’s boys and girls teams celebrated senior night. Five of the Lady Bears were honored — Gregory, Ellis, Penley, Kaitlyn Graves and Mary Beth Fields — and seven Bears were honored — Max Klein, Kevin Garland, Bryan James, Albert Coronado, Clay Sexton, Micah Dockery and Marcus Gore.
The Lady Bears will host Westside Macon in the opening round of the Region 4-AAAA tournament on Tuesday. A win against the Seminoles ( 8-4-0, 3-3-0) would guarantee Griffin its first ever berth in the state playoffs.
“This win is nice, but now comes the big test for us,” Fields said. “I think we’ll be ready.”
