COLUMBUS — The Spalding High soccer team’s run this season came to an end Thursday night in a 3-1 loss at the hands of No. 9-state ranked Hardaway in the opening round of the Class AAA boys state playoffs.
Spalding (9-7-2), which has qualified for the state playoffs every year since the school opened its doors, failed to win for the third time in its last three matches this season during a stretch that included a 2-all tie at Pike County last week.
The victory was the 10th in a row for Hardaway (15-1-1) which now advances to a Sweet 16-round match Tuesday at Region 1-AAA champ Cairo (12-0-1).
The loss signaled an end to Spalding’s season. It was a season highlighted by a seven-match win streak for a senior-rich Spalding club. The Daniel Stansberry and Jordan Davis-coached Jags had 11 seniors.
Seniors on the team include: Chris Barclay, Chris Bowman, James Freeman, Asa Harrell, Thomas Hoffmann, Denny Jones, Ben Mayo, Allen McConnell, Blake Stallings, Bailey Stewart and William Ward.
