Griffin defeats Alcovy, loses to Ola to earn 2nd seed in 4-AAAA

LOVEJOY, Ga. -- The Griffin Lady Bears softball team defeated the Alcovy Lady Tigers 5-1 Friday afternoon at Lovejoy Park, advancing to the Region 4-AAAA title game against the Ola Lady Mustangs later that day.

Alcovy scored first in the bottom of the third inning, getting consecutive doubles off Griffin pitcher Tedra Alford for a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, Griffin’s Alex Smith tripled, scoring Alford, to tie the game at one. Griffin broke the game open after that, scoring four more runs for the final margin. Smith also smacked a double in the game.

Alford, who doubled and singled, struck out 13, allowing just two hits and no walks.

Angel Crawford also doubled for Griffin.

Five minutes after the first game, Griffin played in the region championship game against Ola and lost 7-0. It was scoreless until the fourth inning, when Ola scored one run on one hit. Ola scored six more runs in the fifth inning to put the game away.

Alford struck out six, walked one and surrendered eight hits. The Lady Bears will be the No. 2 seed once the state playoffs start.
