Deadline is 6 p.m., April 28 to enter the VFW Post 5448’s seventh annual Johnny Pierce Memorial Golf Tournament at 8:30 a.m., Sunday May 3 at the Griffin City Golf Course.

Cost is $55 per player and includes cart, green fees, lunch and social. Make checks payable to VFW Post 5448. The tournament will be a standard Fort Lauderdale format with teams being drawn by the Golf Committee.

Proceeds from the tournament will go to benefit: VFW National Home for Children in Eaton Rapids, Mich., in memory of Johnny Pierce, VFW Post 5448 and its Ladies Auxiliary. Social and team introductions to be held 6:30 p.m., Saturday at VFW Post 5448, 1205 West Poplar St. in Griffin, Ga.. Lunch and awards ceremony at VFW to follow tournament. Spouses or dates are invited to attend all functions at Post 5448.

Applications can be picked up at VFW Post 5448 (770-228-8384) or from any Golf Committee member. Golf 2009 Committee Members include: Carlton English, Bear Askew, Steve Ballard, Terry Green, Larry Mayfield, Robert Weeks, Mike Crowder and Ricky Stephens.

5K Dog Walk/Run: The second-annual Indian Springs Fest 5K Run/Dog Walk Fest, co-sponsored by Tenet-Spalding/Sylvan Grove Hospital is May 2 at Indian Springs State Park with the walkers going off at 8 a.m., and runners going off at 9 a.m.

Cost includes T-shirt and is $15 if you pre-register and $20 if you register that day. 5K awards will be given to the first three finishers in each category. Dog walkers will receive goody bags.

The check-in as well as the start/finish line will be at Indian Springs State Park. Results will be clocked and posted. Refreshments will be served following the race.

UGA BOOSTER CLUB TO MEET APRIL 20: The Griffin Chapter of the Georgia Bulldog Club has set its meeting for April 20. Defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner will be the guest speaker.

The meeting will be held at the Experiment Station’s Naomi Woodruff Pavillion and catered by The Varsity between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.

Cost is $25 per person. Please make checks payable to The Griffin Bulldog Club and mail to: Michael Esary; 300 Wilson Road; Building 300 Griffin, Ga. 30224. In the event of rain, the event will be held at Stuckey Auditorium.
