With National Signing Day four days away, Georgia Tech was the latest major college to take a recruiting trip to Griffin. Head coach Paul Johnson and assistant quarterback/B-back coach coach Brian Bohannon stopped by Griffin High on Friday.

Bears being recruited include juniors Xzavier Dickson (DE), Corey Moore (S) and Ty Turner (TE). Dickson — an ESPN-U top-three selection nationally at defensive end in his class — has already fielded offers from Auburn, Florida State, Oklahoma State, Arkansas and Mississippi State as well as Georgia.

Turner (Wake Forest) as well as Moore (Georgia) and junior cornerback/receiver Chandler Worthy (Oklahoma State) have also already received Division I offers. Across town, Spalding High junior defensive tackle Chris Mayes (Georgia) also fits into that category.

Unfortunately, all of the players listed above are juniors and will thus be unable to sign National Letters of Intent next week.

TAKING VISITS: Griffin High has seven seniors — defensive end Brandon Williamson (Alabama State, Middle Tennessee and Gardner-Webb), linebacker Cartavious Woods (Valdosta State and Furman), safety Dontre Morris (Alabama State), running back Buck Hancock (UT-Chattanooga), offensive lineman Demetrius Williams (Alabama State), receiver Denarius Appling (Valdosta State) and quarterback Marcus Waller (Fort Valley and Albany State) — expected to visit Fort Valley State University today.

GHS juniors Xzavier Dickson (DE) and Chandler Worthy (CB) are expected to visit Alabama today, while classmate Corey Moore is expected to visit the Georgia.

Senior Griffin wingback D.J. Morgan (Jacksonville State) is also being recruited.

SHS SENIORS TAKING VISITS: Spalding High has five seniors — defensive lineman Demarcus “Scoop” Allen, kicker Will Jeffcoat, offensive lineman Casey Chafin, receiver Zae Fuller and linebacker Grayson Jones — who have taken visits to various small colleges.

PRIVATE SCHOOL PLAYERS GARNERING INTEREST: GISA Region 4-AA champion Griffin Christian has three seniors — linebacker Josh Robinson, running back Trey Epperson and linebacker Gralon Head — drawing looks from small colleges.

The area’s two eight-man football teams — Faith Christian Academy and Skipstone Academy — also each have a player getting looks. SA senior lineman Ty Reeves is drawing looks as is FCA junior linebacker/running back Robert Jackson.
