The Salvation Army’s Boys and Girls Club of Griffin will host its annual summer program from June 7 to July 23.

The cost for the program, which accepts children ages 6 to 14, is $35 per week. Parents can register at the Griffin-Spalding Salvation Army on Meriwether Street by providing a copy of their child’s birth certificate and vaccination record as well as filling out an application and paying a $20 registration fee.

Each week of the summer program goes from Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and children will be divided into gender and age groups — from 6 to 9 years old and from 10 to 14 years old.

Parents can choose specific weeks during which they want their child to participate.

“It’s not an all-or-nothing (situation). We are not requiring that they pay for the whole summer,” said Jennifer Parker, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Griffin.

As in previous years, a number of weekly themes will be offered to children, such as a sports-related All-Star week, a patriotically filled Red, White and Blue week and an environmentally conscious Go Green week, among others. This year will also feature a week-long sleep-away camp at The Salvation Army’s Camp Grandview in Jasper, which will include cabin lodging, swimming, boating, hiking and fishing.

While fun and excitement are the centerpieces of the program, the program will also provide voluntary tutoring to students for 90 minutes per day.

“It’s a fantastic program,” said Parker, adding that with two highly respected organizations behind the summer program, namely The Salvation Army and the Boys and Girls Club of America, “you know you’re sending your children somewhere you can trust.”

Ron Anderson, a volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club of Griffin, agrees and stresses the affordability of the program.

“There are so many parents out there where child care is a problem in the summertime,” Anderson said. “I really love the summer program because they do a lot with the kids, and it’s really cost-effective. You get a lot of value. My kids go there. It’s the best-kept secret in Griffin.”

The program can accommodate about 100 children in any given week. For more information contact the Griffin-Spalding Salvation Army at 770-412-6566.
