— Thanks to the guy who brought up gas prices. I think for a long tome the name brands here have had a captive market. I bought regular in Barnesville yesterday for $2.51 and it was name brand. I haven’t bought from a Griffin station in years except at Wal-Mart. What people need to do is boycott the Griffin Cartel of Name Brands. Fill up every chance you get anywhere but here.
— Regarding Mr. John Quinn’s letter informing people who have Blue Cross insurance that they will no longer have in-network insurance care with Spalding Regional Hospital and other Tenet facilities after June 30. It has sent us seniors into a tailspin about our health care. Now I hear it will not affect us seniors who have Medicare and Blue Cross/Blue Shield as a supplement, but only those who have Blue Cross only. But nowhere in his letter does he address this.
— Does anyone remember the park and ride lot located on Old Atlanta Road, near the entrance to the University of Georgia campus? Is it ever used? I certainly wouldn’t park a vehicle of mine there. I can’t imagine a more unsafe parking lot. If memory serves, the city of Griffin politicians pushed for that parking area to be built and it cost somewhere around $450,000. Another item on the long list of wasteful spending.
— Shouldn’t the city of Griffin repair the bridge on Old Atlanta Road, near the back entrance to the University of Georgia campus? It would help with the traffic volume related to the shopping area around Kroger and Wal-Mart. It may also be needed as the campus expands. The money would be better spent repairing that bridge than the Sixth Street bridge.
— Thank you to Pastor David Hill at Second Baptist for preaching the word.
— The super ego of college and high school graduates is disgusting.
— The reason that our city and county commissioners approve so many studies is that they want to avoid making decisions on controversial issues. They have been doing studies on the possible relocation of the airport for 20 years.
— People today want gold for doing less. People at the top of all professions are the worst. They want gold for a lot of B.S. The ones that know how to do are thrown aside (out the door).
— Every year during grass-cutting season, adults allow children to ride with them on riding lawn mowers. Do you adults not realize how dangerous this is, or do you simply not care? This equipment is not meant for entertainment. It can cost a child a limb, or their life, in the blink of an eye. Ask any emergency personnel who have witnessed such an accident.
— Thanks to The Griffin Daily News for putting the pictures of the 2010 graduates of Griffin Christian High School in the paper twice, once on Thursday, June 3, and Sunday, June 6. Our private schools in Griffin have been shunned long enough. Once again, thanks for the exposure.
— The Spalding County Parks & Recreation Department will host free summer youth sports camps this summer in football, baseball, girls’ basketball, soccer, Jumpin’ Joe Ward’s basketball camp, and golf. We have nice tennis courts. Why not a tennis camp? Our two high schools would certainly benefit from a tennis camp, along with the private high schools in Griffin.
— Every year, First National Bank of Griffin hosts a banquet for honor roll students from Griffin and Spalding High School. Parents with students in private schools in Griffin would like to know why their honor roll students aren’t invited. I have been a customer with First National Bank for 40 years and I think my money is just as green as the parents with students in public schools.
— An article in the AJC on Friday stated that Sen. John Kerry pressed immigration officials to allow a man’s husband to re-enter this country from Brazil. What an important gesture by a U.S senator.
— Forget “Hope and Change.” We should all “Pray for Change.”
— The United Nations has become such an anti-American money-sucking organization that we need to move the headquarters from this country. How about an eight-year stay in each of the members’ countries?
— For the person who complained about being asked so often “to donate to this and that.” Try doing this: politely, or most likely in your case — sternly, say “no thank you” to those that ask for your donation, then go on with your life. Yep, it’s really that easy. However, I hope that you never find yourself in need of a helping hand should you ever become ill, immobilized or impoverished.
— The person who is upset over the Sixth Street bridge being reworked should look at the advantage it will make. If by chance a train is moving slowly north and all crossings are closed off and by chance an emergency vehicle was going east or west and could not get through to save a life, they would have to go south over a mile to High Falls Road or north past Experiment to Old Atlanta Road.
— I agree with the person who wrote about the gas prices. They are 15 to 20 cents cheaper outside of Spalding County. Also, we do need to boycott BP and we should have been boycotting Citgo because it is owned by the communist dictator Chavez. It is un-American to buy Citgo.
— They built the Taj Mahal in less time than it has taken to build the new senior citizens center.
— I’m not necessarily opposed to commuter rail or passenger rail, but one has to wonder why such a small group of people are pushing so hard for this project. What do they have to gain?
— I recently saw where Griffin is getting a LongHorn steak house. Big deal, we already have the best one around in Mahattan’s. The steaks are always cooked to perfection and the service is top-notch. If you live in Griffin and have not tried Mahattan’s you are missing out. I would put their worst cut of steak up against LongHorn’s and they would win every time.
— This is a communication from the Griffin middle class. Who is this John Izard person who spoke of his Griffin roots at the recent Kiwanis meeting? The article did not expand on that. He insulted me and thousands of other residents of Spalding County when he said there was no “middle” class here as we have all disappeared. Gee, what does that make us who are here, just low-class and high-class?
— Another SPLOST to pay for a commuter train. What a pipe dream. Such a train wouldn’t bring more people from Atlanta looking for a suburban life style. They are urban because they want to be. Look at Amtrak as it’s never produced a dime of revenue. Who would want to live in a train station? Another question for Georians for passenger train, by the time the train is started what is the ticket price projected to cost?

— Chick-fil-A, I do not like your coffee. Switch back. You’re messing up my breakfast routine.
— Every taxpayer in Spalding County and the city of Griffin should visit the Spalding County tax commissioner’s Web site at www.spaldingcountytax.com and use the search feature. Click on “taxpayer search” on the right-hand side of the home page. There you can search by taxpayer name. You may be surprised (or maybe not surprised) at some well-known names that have not paid their taxes.
— After hearing about all of the problems with the new 800 MHz system, I suggest a new slogan for the city of Griffin: “Can you hear me now?”
— The economy has gotten so bad that one of the local barbecue restaurants is now open seven days a week trying to make the money that he had made in four.
— A child born in 2010 has a 50/50 chance of living long enough to see the completion of the new senior center.
— All the gas in this area is distributed from the depot near the intersection of North Hill Street and East McIntosh Road. Yet, the same name brands are about 16 cents per gallon cheaper in Barnesville than they are here in the beautiful downtown Griffin area. Why is this? The prices have always been this way. Gas on U.S. 41 in Lovejoy and Jonesboro is hauled from Griffin, yet cheaper.
